You are Paying Attention to Time in
the Synoptic
Gospels. |
ProblemsNT1210 Fall 2005 Students: Do only the "Timing in Matthew 14-16" problem. Timing in Matthew 14-16 | Create a timeline of the events narrated or alluded to in Matthew 14-16. Find out everything you can about when the events are happening relative to each other. (You do not have to know if it's AD 29 or 30 or whatever; just concentrate on which event is first, second, third, etc. relative to the other events in these chapters.) Look for time markers, then lay out or plot the chapters' events along a timeline so that people can see the way things happened. "Seeing" is important here. Your finished product should be designed to help someone visualize the flow of action and make full use of the time markers you have found in the chapter. To coaching pages…. Holiday Hours | You are a staff member for Vocation, Ltd., a human resources agency specializing in placing followers of Jesus in the service sector. You are placing some who want to know what they may expect in terms of holiday hours. Will there be work on festivals, holidays, the Sabbath, etc.? You know that Jesus said, "A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master" (10:24-25), so you feel comfortable in predicting the future work of Jesus' followers in terms of Jesus' own record of work in the gospels. Review Jesus' approach toward holiday hours in the Gospels. Then write a memo to your prospective employees about what they may expect if, in fact, "a disciple is not above the teacher…." How hard will they work? What kind of time will they put in? Support your conclusions with stories from the life of Jesus. Share also with your prospective employees why, in your judgment, Jesus worked the hours he did.
