Two-Minute Tutorial on New Testament Eschatology

Each writing included in the New Testament has a particular way of speaking about the hope that those who are in Christ have as we look toward the future. Here is the briefest of sketches on four ways of speaking of the End in the New Testament.

Paul & "The Ends of the Ages"

In 1 Cor 10:11, Paul refers to himself and his readers as those "upon whom the ends of the ages have met." Imagine two ends of rope, one in each hand. As you bring your hands together, that space where they meet is where Paul imagines his readers to live. It is not the end (singular) of the ages he is talking about, but the end of the old age and the beginning of something new. "If anyone is in Christ," Paul says, and then the Greek goes on without a subject or verb: "new creation!" (2 Cor. 5:17).
